CHEMIGRAMS
A little known and rarely used process, chemigrams sit at the intersection of painting, photography and printmaking. The materials belong to photography, the process and approach to painting and printmaking: Black and white photo chemicals are painted directly onto black and white photo paper creating a color image. Like other processes in the category of lens-less photography, no camera is used, but unlike all the other processes, light plays no role in the creation of a chemigram. The image comes into being solely through the interactions of the chemicals, and in this respect, as well as in their use of resists, chemigrams are related to printmaking, yet like a painting, each picture is an unique original that can not be replicated since no matrix exists.
